Procedures For Permit to Carry Weapons and Permit to Purchase Weapons
An Iowa Non-Professional Permit to Carry is valid for five (5) years. Application procedures for a Non-Professional Permit to Carry a weapon:
- Monona County residents submit a completed application form in person to the Monona County Sheriff’s Office. Appointments are required. Forms are available on this website or we have forms available at the office.
- Submit a completed certified handgun safety training course form or military DD-214 form.
- Provide a form of picture identification.
- Applicant must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must meet all applicable requirements in Iowa Code Chapter 724.
- Pay the required $50.00 fee for a new permit or $25.00 fee for a renewal permit, cash only.
An Iowa Permit to Acquire is valid for five (5) years. Application procedures for a Permit to Acquire handguns:
- Monona County residents apply at the Monona County Sheriff’s Office.
- Submit a completed application form in person the Monona County Sheriff’s Office. Forms are available on this website or we have forms available at the office.
- Provide a form of picture identification.
- Applicant must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must meet all applicable requirements in Iowa Code Chapter 724.
- Pay the required $25.00 fee, cash only.
Required Documentation
When applying for a new permit you will need to supply a copy of your drivers license, the completed application, as well as ONE of the following types of training documentation:
- Copy of honorable discharge from the military (DD214)
- Certificate from an ILEA or NRA hand gun class OR
- Certificate from an online interactive class by an ILEA or NRA instructor
When applying for the renewal of a current permit you will only need to supply a copy of your drivers license and a completed application. If you have had a permit to carry since 2012, you are exempt from training as holding a permit is proof that you've had training. Remember: You must fill out a renewal form no more than 30 days prior to or up to 30 days after your current expiration date. Otherwise, your application will be considered a new permit request!
