Candidates who are interested in running for office for the Democratic or Republican party must file nomination papers to be placed on the Primary Election ballot. The filing period for partisan candidates for County offices is March 2-March 20, 2026. Nomination papers for all offices must be received by 5:00 PM on the last day of the filing period at the Monona County Auditor’s Office.
County Level Partisan Offices on the 2026 Primary Election Ballot include:
- Board of Supervisor District 2
- Board of Supervisor District 3
- County Treasurer
- County Recorder
- County Attorney
Filing Period for Non-Partisan Candidates/Offices
Candidates who are running for the above listed county offices as NPPO (non-party political organization) candidates are not eligible to appear on the Primary Election ballot. They must file during the General Election filing period which is March 2-June 2, 2026, in order to appear on the General Election Ballot in November. Elected township officials are non-partisan offices. They, too, follow the General Election filing period. Center, Sioux, Soldier and Willow Townships in Monona County elect their township officials.
Candidates interested in running for Soil & Water Commission or Ag Extention must also file required nomination paperwork with the County Auditor. The filing period for these offices has no official start date but must be received in the Auditor's office by August 26, 2026.
Required nomination papers and a detailed candidate guide are available online at the Secretary of State's website at https://sos.iowa.gov/ or at the Monona County Auditor's Office, 610 Iowa Ave, Onawa, IA. Please call the Auditor's office at 712-433-2191 for signature requirements and/or nomination papers.
